Palm Beach - A limited Known secret

What We Already Know
Palm Beach is an island, chic and quiet. It thumbs its old bluenose at Miami's glitzy South Beach. It shrugs off L.A.'s Rodeo Drive with its exclusive Worth Avenue, where art galleries are pricier and polo players spicier. The privileged winter residents shop at smart boutiques, never carry cash, and party on yachts the size of Hms Queen Mary. Dinner at home is akin to an evening with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. You can pass it on the highway and never know it's there.

Best selling author James Patterson enjoys living on Palm Beach thanks to the quarterly folk who buy his books. The Kennedy estate has come to be the Palm Beach Historical Society, not yet open to the public. And while Donald Trump cannot be called old money, no one ever told him that, and no one ever will.

News From Bhutan

Culture
There are the thorough but good culture spots: the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, the Hibel Museum of Art, the Royal Poinciana Playhouse, and the coveted Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition each spring.

It Ain't Just For The Rich
Palm Beach has elegance and grace, inexpressive places and quiet places. How gorgeous are its inexpressive gardens, how welcome its refinement and tranquility to visitors from the hectic mainland. Crossing the Flagler street Bridge from West Palm, the first thing you'll do is slow down and breathe. Directly to your left is a haughty sounding entity called The community of The Four Arts. Palm Beach likes titles that contain community and royal, but we don't care. The Four Arts is a nonprofit cultural assosication founded in 1936. Every season, from November straight through April, it presents famous speakers, concerts, films, educational programs, and art exhibitions. If you go there in May you can enjoy it without the crowd.

The Four Arts
When you walk into the silent library there's no one there but a lady at the front desk; she barely nods. You take the elevator to the second floor and you are in the Children's Library, which is hosting a rare photography show of the Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayan Mountains. There's no one there. In mere seconds photographers Tom Sterling, Kathleen Sweeney and Dr. L. Samuel Wann whisk you to one of the remotest places on earth.

Cloud Kingdom
You are no longer in sun-drenched Palm Beach. You are in "The Cloud Kingdom" of the Drukpa people. You are in the nearnessy of lamas. You hear the constant flapping in the wind of prayer flags. Women weave multicolored blankets for winter, children's faces are red as apples. Glassy-eyed yaks gaze at you from medieval hill towns where red robed monks till the soil. You are in what is now called, "the last Shangri-la." And yes, it's quiet and you're breath is slow and even.

The orchad of Oriental Delights
Across the lane from the library construction are countless concealed gardens, one merging into another. You walk straight through an excellent wrought iron gate. There's some performance in the temple orchad of the Chinese female Buddha of Mercy and Compassion, Kuan Yin. A live photo shoot is taking place in and colse to a sacred pool with a blond model posing for the cameraman. Watching over the performance are sculptures of Kuan Yin seeing gorgeous and serene while the unfortunate model wilts in the sun.

Other than the camera crew, no one else is there. Splashing fountains and murmuring pools are surrounded by hundreds of species of tropical plants that attract chirpers on the wing. A multi-colored mosaic tile bench is waiting for someone, and shady walkways lead to inexpressive gardens within gardens.

Your Own Walking Tour
You'll find more local flora in the botanical Pan's orchad on Hibiscus Avenue, where a gorgeous bronze of Pan playing his pipe guards the entrance. But it's the many gardens you'll want to discover. Some are inexpressive behind homes of residents; others will surprise you in unexpected courtyards that lead to shops and galleries and more gardens. The architecture of the town is old refined elegance, strongly influenced by 20th century architect Addison Mizner and his Moorish-Mediterranean-style.

A Town Dedicated to the race of Green
The local folks and stupendous capital devoted to maintaining nature and the environment, as well as the cultural enrichment of the population, are what continue to make Palm Beach a treat to be enjoyed by every visitor. But it is the ocean and sparsely populated, well-maintained beaches that continue to lure me here.

Pristine and magnificent, fringes of sand dunes with hammock flora line the powder white beaches. The frothy dark blue pounding surf turns languid teal in summer. Unlike some other cities and towns on the coast, the road that runs along the beach front is residential-no shops or restaurants clutter the natural splendor. Palm Beach has exact codes that even the Donald finally agreed to when he succumbed to enchanting his Mar-A-Lago flagpole inward from the oceanfront; big news here.

Time to Dine
Now that you've fed the soul without spending a dime, you can supervene me back over the Flagler street Bridge and head west by northwest to Palm Beach Gardens and some of the best restaurants for population who work for a living. In addition to P.F. Chang and Seasons 52, there are many restaurants costing more and many for less, together with the ever-popular vegetarian Sweet Tomatoes, 1900 West Palm Beach Lakes Blvd.

In case you've won the lotto and want to remain on the island, I've listed a few Palm Beach suggestions for the upper crust palate.

Café Boulud
The Brazilian Court (attended a argument here; fab place)
301 Australian Avenue
Palm Beach, Fl 33480

Four Seasons Resort
2800 S. Ocean Blvd.
Palm Beach, Fl 33480

Bice Ristorante
313 1/2 Worth Ave.
Palm Beach, Fl 33325

Nightlife
Taboo (sort of expensive)
221 Worth Ave
Palm Beach, Fl 33480

McKenna's Place (sort of nice sports bar)
4636 Jog Road South
Palm Beach, Fl

If you can get in for just a peek, visit The Breakers Hotel on Palm Beach. Established in 1896, it is The Florida landmark from the pioneer days of Henry Flagler. The Sunday Brunch will have you shell out a mere per person. Ouch! Just think of all you've enjoyed without spending a dime.

Don't Pay An Arm And A Leg For Your Rental Car

If you know you're going to need a rental car in the near future, the smartest thing to do is to start shopping right away. Prices can convert at the drop of a hat, and generally the earlier a car is booked, the economy the price. There are other tricks and tips to help save money and hassles when dealing with dollar rent auto companies.

Paying an arm and a leg for a dollar rent auto booking isn't necessary, if you do the following things:

News From Bhutan

* Check all available dollar car rental associates in the location you will need the car. If the trip involves only local driving, even consider contacting smaller, more regional associates for pricing. Local associates sometimes offer the best prices.

* choose a economy car. Large, luxury vehicles will cost you more than compact cars. This choice can save dozens of dollars a day, which can truly add up over the policy of a two-week vacation, for example.

* Seek out discounts. Allowance options for dollar rent car bookings can be found in all kinds of places. From the hotel you'll be staying in to your local auto club, they're all worth checking out to see if they have discounts available.

* Multi-bookings. Sometimes dollar rent auto bookings cost less if you rent on positive days or for a set whole of days. Find out if staying an extra day would truly cost you less in the long run by asking.

* Accepting an unwanted or unpopular make car. Everybody wants the flashy rental car, but few want the boring compact. choose a less popular car for yourself to save a few extra dollars.

* Book in advance. By doing this you can save a lot of money. Just like the airlines, car rental places will reward those who let them know weeks in advance they'd like a car.

Now that you know how to save some money with your dollar rent auto booking, it's time to consider what you'll need to close the deal. Here's what you can expect:

* To retain a dollar rent auto booking, most associates will wish a valid prestige card. While you might be able to pay for the car in cash when you arrive, the prestige card secures the booking. If you don't have one, see if the rental enterprise has an alternative they'll accept.

* Valid Id/driver's license. This is a must for any reservation. Make sure you have one.

* Fairly clear driving record. While a dollar rent auto booking won't hinge on a single ticket, man who has 20 might have a problem conclusion the deal.

Remember once you make your dollar rent auto booking, it's a good idea to check back a few days before you need the car to ensure it's in place. There's nothing worse than arriving at a destination to find your rental car booking isn't valid because it wasn't confirmed!

Hawaii house Vacation - Should You Plan a house Vacation to Hawaii?

If you are thinking of a Hawaii house vacation, you'll want to keep a few things in mind. First, you're probably going to pay more than you would for a vacation to grandma's house, but it will also be a lot more fun for you and your family. But although it can be expensive, there is some good news and that is that even though you will be paying higher prices for the most part, there are still specials and packages ready to save money.

Since Hawaii is universally recognized as one of the most dreamed about vacations, a Hawaii house vacation should be high on your list of things to do. You can check with your local trip agent or an online trip group to see if they have some good deals on a vacation container to Hawaii. Often a container deal will allow you to take your house to this island paradise without having to take out a second mortgage. It is unrealistic to think that you are going to go there without spending anything, but you undoubtedly can save money with these packages.

News From Bhutan

Now you will need to plan your activities once you arrive in Hawaii. It is rather unrealistic to assume that you will spend all of your time lying colse to on the beach. Yes, this is undoubtedly a free performance and you won't have to spend any money to do it but it would also be rather boring. Especially given that there are so many activities in Hawaii for you and your house to enjoy. You can take in a helicopter ride to enjoy the great scenic views, visit a volcano site, take surfing lessons (great fun) or learn how to parasail, or even do some boating and golfing. Hiking is also a beloved activity. Of course you'll want to do some shopping as well to pick up some Hawaii souvenirs.

A Hawaii house vacation will be something you and your house will all the time remember and treasure. If this is something you have all the time wanted to do, you should make a plan to spend your next vacation on the white sandy beaches of Hawaii and enjoy the peaceful serenity of this gorgeous island paradise. While this house vacation will not last forever, the memories of it will all the time be there. So if a visit to Hawaii is your family's dream, what is stopping you?

How the travel manufactures Should Be Marketing Online - Do You?

The backpacker might not know their next destination while at home but they have some holidays coming up and need a destination! Their friends are less nomadic, so what is the solution for tour inspiration when its cold dark outside?

What makes you want to tour somewhere? Is it a suggestion from a friend who went there last year. Or was it a photo that you saw somewhere. A film perhaps. For my own inspiration it has often been the suggestion from fellow backpackers that I come to trust to know what I like as we often like the same things.

News From Bhutan

It could be a certain sport that you do that is great performed in a more suitable location for example Scuba Diving in the Caribbean is great than in your home area. Or you might like to ride horses up the side of the mountain in Chiapas in Mexico.

What do you look for in a destination? maybe like me when you got your hands on a lonely planet from the library you first check the night-life. You don't want to end up somewhere boring after all! So that's something that communal sites can supply for people. We want to be that coffee table chat in the youth hostel or the breakfast bar. Where nomads - backpackers collide but online in a communal networking context.

Part of the fun of tour is meeting new habitancy who like travel. If your in the tour business you will roughly beyond doubt be advertising on the internet but if your extent of your website is a digital version of your brochure your doing it wrong.

Your internet nearnessy should be partly your own site but mostly you will be hard at work marketing on other websites such as Facebook or Twitter and in the tour business 'landed at'. Your portfolio of communal networking sites becomes the online real estate you use often in addition to updating your own site with news.

You should have the following tools ready to you within this communal Network Site

Rss feed enabled profiles - so you have an Rss feed of your hotels or tours or just news right? This can be fed into your communal networking portfolio so updates on your own site go into the Rss article on your site and it updates automated in the communal network site.

Reviews - your buyer should be able to quote your services and you should encourage them to do this.

Network with other members - Add friends and some competitors as you will see what they are doing. The best salesmen just chat about their products not push them.

Videos and Photos - nothing sells a tour like energizing and entertaining photos and videos. Along with reviews tagging photos of past customers in photos will validate the reviews they have written. If you don't have past customers on the communal site ask them and they will enjoy the benefits too.

Don't write too much - give sufficient information just to whet the appetite, the photos and videos are more important.

Share your profile pic on Facebook and Twitter - also share a link to these sites from your home page showing how networked your company is.

Being on trip advisor is not enough! Be there but don't be a part of the crowd in a sea of competitors where is the dynamic energy you will get from a great video or photos tagged with satisfied customers.

You can deep link and share as much as you like.

Facebook has a limitation of being to personal mixing with your business.

The Pat At The People's Back

21st September, 2009, immense flood in the west and a huge blaze of fire in the central region. Now which region is left next? Though southern regions are not that much hampered, but I still feel it as the hot spot of assorted diseases like Malaria, Dengue and so on.

Haiti Earthquake and violent flood in Pakistan. Have you ever noticed the amount of lost lives? Countless! What about the major reactions from the government for their resilient position? There was but at a slow phase! Just contradict it with ours. We are fortunate and blessed indeed!-beyond the boundaries of oceans and seas.

News From Bhutan

We Bhutanese habitancy result the true law of Gross National Happiness (Gnh). Because we reduce our happiness for the sake of all our brothers and sisters in the kingdom. Pat at the back to the appeal Pictures association of Bhutan (Mpab) for their active and patriotic initiatives to raise funds through the cultural programmes at the clack tower square.

We had undergone times when both our important leaders were absent at home- His majesty's 9 days tour in India and Prime Minister's Tour in Europe and Asia. But seemed great! We got a greater substitution to tiptoe their work! His Majesty the fourth druk Gyelpo, Royal families and the acting Prime priest arrived at the victim scene no sooner the start of it, to console and promise the habitancy on their resilient lives. Health priest acted like an anti-virus to forestall the habitancy from the thinking disorder, spread of diseases and to uphold sanitation. Our Opposition Leader was also gift at the scene. On the other hand, our religious leader took active measures by offering thousands of butter lamps in the victim's name with the habitancy of Sarpang Dzongkhag.

Arriving back at home, the two leaders were not involved to meet their families but their victims.

Financial Times - My Favourite English Language Newspaper for Travels Abroad and World News

Are you often travelling to destinations abroad and cannot get your normal newspaper everywhere? Go for Financial Times - it isn't what the name suggests only about financial matters but a valuable source of data about how things are going around in our dynamic world.

I must admit that I went on many travels abroad before I recognized the normal value of Financial Times and asked for it in a plane. I think it wasn't before I had engaged in some stock trading as part of my pension savings that I dared to open Financial Times.

News From Bhutan

But ever since Financial Times has been my favourite 'on plane newspaper', and I often keep parts of it for hereafter reference. It is true that Financial Times brings a lot of data about business, corporate clubs and the stock shop around in the world. But for me the real value of Financial Times has been the newspaper's thorough reports and reviews of what is going on around the world. In normal Financial Times brings rather neutral data and estimate reports of the situation. Sometimes with a very valuable advent fitting to real expert journalism.

I elucidate this level of seriousness as a part of the function of Financial Times as an prominent source of data for decision manufacture of big business. Fake data or biased news about the situation in a country could not only mislead the reader but be a catastrophe for some decisions related to big business.

Honestly, many American politicians would be much best informed about the world outside Us if they took the time to read Financial Times daily. I don't dare to recommend Financial Times to the normal American, as many Americans unfortunately aren't reading a daily newspaper but are just trusting television news.

The television news and especially the most beloved ones aren't that trustworthy, especially not their data about the rest of the world. To say it mildly I guess the world would look much distinct if more Americans were informed at the level of Financial Times as a background for their political stand and views on the world.

My primary motivation for opportunity my first Financial Times was my personal interest in how the stock shop was doing. It was the year before the dot.com collapse and through my early warnings of that catastrophe for many stocks related to It and the so-called new economy I was able to avoid any serious loses.

So, also for the more coarse man who cares for his own hereafter the reading of Financial Times would be a good investment of time - and then at the same time the prominent advantage to accomplish a much deeper insight of how the world is working and how the life is going on around in our beautiful but brittle world.

Is Thailand Safe to Visit?

As a longtime resident of Thailand I have a determined comprehension into either or not Thailand is safe for visitors or those wishing to stay longer term.

There are normally multiple instances of unsafe activities going on in the country at any chosen time. I will delineate the major areas where foreigners need to take extra precautions to stay safe while their stay.

News From Bhutan

Bangkok, the Capital of Thailand, is ground zero for political movements. The country has not seen stability politically in a very long time. Some would say it was never garage in modern times. Currently there are red shirt groups and yellow shirt groups that are in opposition. The forces sometimes gets complex and stages forces coups - and there is always fighting - sometimes lethal as groups confront each other, and exertion to turn the power structure that exists. This is a constant struggle and matters little who happens to be in power at the moment, there is always unrest in Bangkok.

The problems are compounded when police and forces are called on to retain order in the streets... Sometimes the hand is heavy and they end up killing protestors. This does not help the situation and it can escalate from there.

As a visitor to Thailand you would not want to be spending your vacation or any time at all in Bangkok when there are bombs going off and forces and/or police in the streets to control the demonstrations. It is just a very bad idea. It is not safe and you will not have a good time. If all you are arrival to Thailand for is to spend time in Bangkok, choose a time when there is peace in the country or at least a small risk of violence letting loose.

Another area that is often times not safe - and currently it is not, is the deep south. Muslim separatists in the southern Thailand provinces have waged a violent campaign against both Thai Buddhist and Thai Muslim believers that have not joined their radical organization. There have been practically 3,000 deaths in the south over the past few years, though no foreigners are known to have been killed yet. Thailand tourism officials do not advise that foreigners visit these southernmost provinces and you would be wise to limit your travels to the other provinces.

Natural disasters like the devastating tsunami of 2004 have the inherent to re-occur any time, though the chances are apparently not high that a similar even will recur in Thailand anytime soon.

Pattaya, Patong Beach, Patpong, and other tourist filled areas can be bad news at night. There are robberies and assaults that occur nightly, but if you are not one of the ones bar-fining girls or ladyboys for a night of fun in your room you will probably be Ok. There are a number of things you should know about Thai culture - which goes well beyond this article. In my last paragraph of this narrative I will give you other resource that will help you immensely.

Is Pattaya safe? Sometimes. Is Patong Beach safe? More often than Pattaya, yes. Is Patpong safe? Not so safe in general, no I would not reconsider it safe.

Your mileage may vary while your trip if you plan on availing yourself of the adult carnival of fun in Thailand. You may well find yourself beat up and in the hospital or you might have a perfectly safe time, despite indulging in outrageous nighttime activities. It is hard for me to give a blanket statement about either Thailand is safe for all people because all people are different.

The last time anyone ventured a guess there were practically 100,000 foreigners living in Thailand as long-term expats here for more than vacation. while a typical year when there is not much political fighting in Bangkok there are over 12 million foreign tourists per year enjoying the country. Very few of them have a question with their physical protection while they are here. Most of them take some precautions. Many of them are frequent visitors.

Visiting or staying in Thailand can be risky or it can be relatively safe and enjoyable. Probably the biggest factor in the equation is you. If you are the type that looks for problem or does not try hard to avoid problem you might find it in Thailand. If you do not have any taste in the country you will probably be doing yourself a great favor by researching more about Thai culture and the experiences of foreigners in the country.

Guide to Trieste, North East Italy

Introduction

Trieste is an Adriatic coastal city in northeastern Italy, close
to the border with Slovenia. The sea in the Gulf of Trieste is
very clear and clean, with limestone cliffs and rocky
beaches. The centre of the city has a mid-European feel,
more Austrian than Italian, Trieste was the seaport of the
Hapsburg Empire.

News From Bhutan

Unique Points

You can enjoy a mixture of a sea/beach holiday and the
attractions of a cultural city.

It is an ideal destination for a short break but you could
easily spend a week here too. The Verdi Theatre hosts an
opera season in the winter and an operetta festival in
summer. You can swim in the beautiful clear sea, gad the
promenade, and walk along the cliff paths. Take in the
wonderful art collection at the Revoltella Museum. You can
sip coffee on Piazza Unita Italia with its grand 19th century
buildings, which face onto the sea.

Getting there

Ryanair flies into Trieste from London Standsted. The
airport is 35 kms west of Trieste but there is quarterly communal
transport on Coach 51 into Trieste.

Getting around

If you do decide to hire a car, it is worth checking that you
can take it into Slovenia and Croatia if you are inspecting
day trips there.

Trieste has a good communal converyance network.

There is a "Trieste by Bus" city tour in 13 stops. This is
available on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm from the end of
June to mid October. The two and a half hour trip allows
you to see the city's main attractions. The cost is nearby
five euros per person.

You can take the Opicani tram up to the Carso plateau, 348
metres above sea level. This funicular tramway was built in
1902. The tram leaves from Piazza Oberdan in the city
centre up Scorolo hill to the plateau above.

History

According to folklore Trieste was founded by Tergeste, a
friend of Jason and the Argonauts. old Tergeste as a
Roman colony is dated to nearby 178 Bc. It became more
important while the reign of Octavian when roads were
improved.

The city has had many rulers while its history: Goths,
Byzantines, and Lombards. In the 13th century Trieste was
forced to swear allegiance to Venice. To leave Venetian
domination, Trieste sought the safety of Duke Leopold
of Austria. Trieste was of great point to the Hapsburg
Empire as a seaport and was made a Freeport in 1719.
Without customs barriers the port and city flourished.

At the end of the First World War with collapse of the
Hapsburg Empire, Trieste was returned to Italy in 1918.
Trieste was taken over by the Third Riech when Italy
withdrew from the Second World Ward in September 1943.
Two years later there was a 40-day occupation by Tito's
Yugoslav forces. After 9 years under an Anglo-American
government Trieste was handed over to the Italian
government.

Trieste's history may help illustrate why 70% of Italians
apparently did not know that Trieste was part of Italy in a
recent belief poll!
With Eu enlargement Trieste is ideally located as the only
natural port in the centre of Europe. Trieste is one of three
finalists to host the international Expo of Science,
Technology and Culture in 2008. If its bid is prosperous
there will be more speculation in the area and Trieste will
become best known on the world map.

Literary Connections

The Irish author James Joyce lived in Trieste while the
early part of the 20th century. When he first arrived he
worked as a tutor at the Berlitz School of English. He went
on to write "The Dubliners", "The Portrait of an Artist as a
Young Man" and start "Ulysses" in Trieste. The rich mix of
central European and Eastern Mediterranean culture in
Trieste is said to have had a great sway on his writing.

Joyce was English tutor to Itali Svevo, the Italian novelist.
Svevo was born in Trieste in 1861, his mom was part of a
Triestian Jewish family, and his Father was of German
descent. Joyce encouraged and praised Svevo's work and
Svevo wrote critiques of Joyce's work.

Svevo's book, "The Confessions of Zeno", was virtually
ignored in Italy. however Joyce recommended the book to
publishers in France, where it was hailed as a masterpiece.
The book is an autobiography of Zeno, written for Zeno's
psychoanalyst, to help get to the bottom of his smoking
addiction.

Svevo is credited by Welleck as "an Italian novelist with
permanent petition as a psychoanalytical psychologist and
as a portrayer of the inhabitants of Austrian and later Italian
Trieste and their often uncertain national allegiance."

Jan Morris wrote the book, "Trieste and the Meaning of
Nowhere". Morris claims this is her final book, a self-
examination based in Trieste. Morris changed gender.
Jan Morris first visited Trieste at the end of the Second
World War as young Welsh soldier. She describes how the
city "curiously haunted her" . She revisited the city as an
elderly woman.

Morris describes Trieste as "natural capital of the nation of
nowhere". By this she means a home for the so-called
"Fourth World" . This is a scattered group with the tasteless
values of humour and understanding, usually exiles in their
own communities but probably numerous sufficient to form
their own nation.

I laughed at Clay Risen's annotation in his piece about
Trieste in the quadrilateral Table in Spring 2003. He observed
that "Trieste is the only city in Eruope which appears more
often in reflective essays than in guide books of newspaper
travel sections."

Exploring the city

The best way to explore the city is to walk around.

The Piazza dell' Unita d'Italia is the heart of the city. The
square was created towards the end of the 19th century. It
houses the City Hall, with its clock tower featuring statues of
Mikeze and Lakeze, figures from Trieste folklore;
Government House, with its gilded mosaic wall
decorations; and the former Head Office of Lloyd Triestino,
built in Renaissance style by an Austrian architect.

The Victory Lighthouse lights the Gulf of Trieste and
commemorates the dead of the First World War. It stands
almost 70 metres high with a scaled dome containing a
statue of winged Victory. At the base of the column is the
anchor of the torpedo boat Audace, the first Italian ship to
enter the harbour in 1918. The lighthouse took 4 years to
complete and was officially opened in 1927.

The Old Stock replacement is a fine example of neo-classical
architecture, resembling a Greek temple. The Old Stock
Exchange stands by the so called Grand Canal. however
this is rather an misnomer as the canal is very short. There
is a statue of Joyce by one of the bridges.

The Arco di Riccard is a Roman gate to the city belief to
date from 33 Ad. It is in Piazzetta di Ricordo in the old city.
You can see the Roman amphitheatre at the foot of San
Guisto hill.

The Verdi Opera Theatre opened in 1801. It is of a similar
style to La Scala in Milan.

Museums

There are many museums in Trieste, most of which are
closed on Mondays.

Probably the best is The Revoltella Museum, which was
founded in 1872 when Baron Revoletta left his home and art
collection to the city of Trieste. He also set up an
endowment, which enabled a larger collection to be
acquired. The Art Gallery has now spread over three
buildings in order to house the ever-expanding collection by
many Italian and other artists.

Other museums include:

The Regional Centre for the Study of old and Modern

Military History

The Civic Museum

The Museum of Oriental Art

Piccolo Pharmacy Museum

The Railway Museum

Café society

As Trieste is a port it was one of the first European cities to
take to coffee in a big way. The first coffee houses in Trieste
opened at the starting of the 18th century. These cafés
become very beloved with artists and intellectuals. Several
of the primary cafes are going strong, the Tommeseo and
the Cafee degli Specchi.

Triestines are very single about their coffee. If you order
a cappuccino the Trieste version will be a black coffee with
a puny milk. You would need to order an Italian cappuccino.
Mixing spirits with coffee is a no-no, viewed as a beverage
favoured by foreign lorry drivers!

Cultural and Sporting Events

The Barcolana is held on the second Sunday of October.
This is a pilotage competition which has run for 30 years and
has practically 2000 vessels competing. There are other
events while the week such as the Saturday nighttime
regatta. The winner is the boat, which can accomplish the
highest amount of laps nearby the San Guisto basin. The
Music Festival takes place for three evenings at the Piazza
d'Italie. There is a line up of Italian and international talent
and it's free.

From October to May the concert and opera season unfolds
in the historic neo-Classical Teatro Comunale Giuseppe
Verdi (opened in 1801 and designed by Matteo Petch,
architect of Milan's La Scala) and the modern Sala
Tripcovich. The festival of Light Opera is held in July and
August at the Verdi. Figures of international renown
congregate in Trieste for performances of such works as
Fritz Kreisler's "Sissi", "The Land of Smiles" and Franz
Lear's "Judith".

Castello Miramare

This castle was built for Archduke Maximilian as a
residence by the sea. Maxilmilian and his wife, Charlotte of
Belgium, came to live here in 1860. however their stay only
lasted for 4 years as Maximilian was despatched to Mexico,
where he been offered the throne in an attempt to end the
Civil War there. Rebel troops killed Maximilian. Charlotte
lived at the Castello alone briefly and then returned to her
native Belgium. You can visit the castle and gardens.

In July and August the tragic love story is brought to life in a
"Sons et Lumieres". The voice of the Castle caretaker
recounts the love story of Maximilian and Charlotte.
Performances in English and German can be requested on
Saturdays by phoning +39 40 414177

Castello di Duino

This old castle dates from the 11th century, the only
recognisable remains are the tower and an arch. The new
castle was completed in the 15th century.
Legend tells that in medieval times a young princess fell in
love with a local boy. Her Father locked her away in a tower
and had her lover killed in the courtyard below and the
corpse thrown in the sea. In despair the Princess leapt
from the tower, her screams turned her to stone as she
hurtled down. Near the shore is a rock that looks like a
woman's body. Some say that "Dama Biance" still haunts
the area searching for her lost love.

Duino Castle has only recently opened its doors to the
public. Prince Carlo Allessandro and his house still live in
the castle. The castle has accommodated many paramount
guests: Dante, Listz and Struass.

The coastal path, the Rilke proceed from Duino to
Sistians is named after the German poet, a guest at the
castle from 1911 - 1912.

The Grotta Gigante, the Giant Cave

This cave is the largest accessible cave in the world. It is
estimated that you could fit St Peters Cathedral inside. The
cave was first explored in 1840 by Lidner. In 1904, a four-
year scheme started to turn the cave into a tourist attraction. It
took 4000 candles to light the cave, electricity was only
installed in 1957.
There are hourly guided visits. You can find out about
opening hours by phoning 040 327312.

Swimming

The beach at Sistinna Spiaggia is said to be one of the best
in Italy. It can be reached by the no. 51 and 21 buses from
Trieste. Grignano is closer to Trieste and is reached by the
no. 36 bus.

Where to eat

Harry's Grill in the Hotel Gran Duchi is one of Trieste's most
exclusive restaurants. I have eaten at this restaurant. I was
even served with a pre-starter, a tasty titbit of stuffed
aubergine, and a pre-dessert, a lovely strawberry mousse.
The together with bread and bread sticks has been freshly
baked. My (proper) starter was stuffed pasta, the main
course was sea bass, topped off with white chocolate
mousse rippled with passionfruit sauce. It is entirely
possible to have a lighter meal, if you can resist the
temptation. In Summer you can sit out on the
pedestrianised square. Main courses cost from 16 - 26
euros. Piazza dll"Unita d"Italia 2, tel: 040 660606

Al Bragozzo is the best-known bistro at the port, which
specialises in seafood. The plainly yet creatively ready
meals pay homage to the sea and its legacy by combining
the elements of Italian cuisine and the riches of the
Mediterranean. Specialties include spaghetti alla Giorgio
(with tomatoes and herbs), ravioli stuffed with herbs,
monkfish braised with artichokes (and cooked with white
wine), and spaghetti with lobster. There are also many
preparations of salmon and shrimp. You can eat at the
outdoor tables, weather permitting, if you visit in the
summer. Main courses cost from 10 - 25 euros. Riva
Nazario Sauro 22. Tel: 040 303001.

There are many buffets in Trieste. These are restaurants
which specialise in pork, often in varied stews, sausages
and soups. Two of the best known are:
Re di cappe, Via Geppa 11, tel 040 370330
Da Giovanni, Via S Lazzaro 14, tel 040 639396
